Not Backwards in coming Forward. Accomplished singer, dancer, choreographer and writer extraordinaire Kelly Auty brings us her new cabaret show “Backwards & in High Heels”. Following her hugely successful “Wild Women Show”, this new show shines a spotlight on talented women artists from the 1920s to the 1980s. Kelly interlaces stories about their lives with her own impressive renditions of the songs in styles including folk, blues, jazz, country, rock and soul. Her handpicked band provides wonderful backing and three part vocal harmonies. Expect to hear works from singers as diverse as Patsy Cline, Bette Midler, Annie Lennox, Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Miriam Makeba, Odetta, Joan Armatrading, Carol King, Joni Mitchell and KD Lang. “Backwards & in High Heels” is the ideal show to end the 2016 Café Culture Series. RuffArtZ gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

ABOUT THE HALL
Ruffy Mechanics Hall was erected in 1893 – a small weatherboard building with a small supper room at the back. From 1959 to 1967 Mr Tom Eddy’s generator was used to provide power to the hall until the grand ‘Switch-On Ball’ on 30 June 1967. The Hall has since benefited from great fundraising and many working-bees by the community, along with government grants, making it a wonderful venue for many events, including live performances.

New projects have seen the installation of cafe blinds to enable the rear skillion to be enclosed in bad weather; a spectacular stone fire place ensuring a cosy atmosphere; a BBQ area and landscaping of the rear garden area; as well as a wheel-chair accessible toilet.

The Ruffy Hall has also benefited from the installation of solar panels to offset electricity usage/costs. The necessary removal of some trees has resulted in improved access and light at the front of the hall. There is now a soldier’s memorial area in memory of local men who served in WWII – this memorial is wonderful sight right near the entrance to Ruffy.

ABOUT THE HALL
The Ruffy Hall was originally known as the Ruffy Mechanics Institute and is over 125 years old. It has been renovated to include a new stage and professional kitchen, rear skillion and open fireplace but retains the original tongue and groove wood work in the ceilings and walls. It is cherished by the local community and used regularly for live performances (RuffArtZ), private celebrations, meetings and events such as the Ruffy Artfest.
