ABOUT THE HALL
Balmoral Mechanics Hall is of social significance to the community of Balmoral as a main setting for public and social events in the town since the late nineteenth century. Much loved for its preserved atmosphere of an old-time hall, it has played a continuing role as a function centre and meeting place for clubs and societies, as an entertainment venue and for its consolidation with the local bowling club. It is historically significant for its association with important local figures who struggled to get the building constructed. It has served continuously as the town’s public hall, variously as a meeting place for clubs and societies, a library and recreation centre and a cinema.

Chameleon Arts welcomes everyone to an exhibition of community artwork. We’ll be filling our Hall with … Our Woolly creations that were included in Hamilton and surrounding towns’ inaugural and highly successful Woolly West Fest which was held in August 2014 in conjunction with the annual Sheepvention Expo. If you haven’t met Balmoral’s Eweina, the handcrafted purple sheep and her four shopfront lambs, they are a must-see. Eweina’s diary is filling fast so this might be a rare appearance! Artworks from our first ever ‘Big Draw’, held on 11 October 2014. Our community drawing event was themed “It’s Our World – A Celebration of Our Environment’. Balmoral locals unleashed their inner artists against the backdrop of our vibrant and inspiring Martinich-Carran mural. Come and see the results! We are proud to showcase our local works.

ABOUT THE HALL
The Balmoral Mechanics Institute is a single story, symmetrical red brick hall built in 1888. The original building was simple and in the ‘stripped’ Classical style standard for such buildings of the time. It is of architectural significance as a prominent landmark in the townscape of Balmoral and is historically significant for its association with important local figures who struggled to have the building constructed.
The hall boasts a proscenium arch stage with retractable curtains, lighting, a movie screen and backstage dressing rooms. It is adaptable for studio style and ‘in the round’ small-scale theatre productions. The hall’s consolidation with the adjoining Balmoral Bowling Club allows expansion of the space to cater for larger community events.
