Located on the site of a former Caroline Chisholm Sheltershed, Malmsbury Mechanics institute was formed in 1862 and while initially meeting in the sheltershed buildings converted into the Council Chambers, the current building was constructed in 1876. The addition of the Federal Hall in 1896 gave the Institute the capacity to run a Debating Society as well as the local library. Still disseminating “Useful Knowledge”, the building currently houses Malmsbury Historical Society and public events
