Some history about The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre was built in 1926 by William Lawrence & Sons who was the father of opera singer Margary Lawrence. She promised if he built the theatre and she did not win the Sun Aria she would come home and stay on the farm of course she did win and did not come home to the farm to live.  In 1946 the building was purchased by the shire council for 1500 pounds.  1948 was the year the first talking movies were shown at the theatre and in Winchelsea. The theatre was used as a picture theatre for the weekly picture show for approximately 5 years. The event of television saw the demise of the movie shows in 1958.  It was then used for Balls and Dances and is still used for ballroom dancing in our time.  The Globe Theatre is now managed by the Winchelsea Lions Club & is used for public and private functions.
