ABOUT THE HALL:

The Haven Memorial Hall was constructed in 1953 and has been the hub of community activities since then. It is recorded in the hall’s history that in 1959 around 300 people attended a special event where Haven’s oldest resident Mrs E Clark cut the ribbon to flood the building with electric light.

The first power bill was £2/12/2. The local community worked tirelessly to raise money for the building and many great events have been held in it over the years including Debutante Balls, Cabarets, Concerts including the very memorable and well-attended School Concerts There have been many working bees and upgrades done to the building including indoor toilets added in 1988 (prior to this it was a long trek to the outside toilets in the dark).

In 2001 a $20,000 grant allowed for the hall to be re-roofed, new windows, painting and other maintenance. In 2005 a grant allowed for volunteers to install a paved area at the rear of the hall and some fencing providing an excellent outdoor area. In 2007 another grant allowed for the kitchen to be upgraded, a new front entry porch and a storage shed.

In 2009 on Black Saturday the building was surrounded by flames as fire rushed through the area burning the gardens, playground, tennis shelters and trees. Fire fighters and water tankers helped to save the building on the day. The building has services the community well over the past sixty-two years but unfortunately the foundations and the main structure of the building is tired and nearing the end of its life. Precinct Planning is currently underway with plans to construct a more modern building that will again service the community for the next sixty+ years.

With the current hall being used in excess of 500 times a year it has certainly proved its worth. The school has grown to in excess of 120 students so now doesn’t fit in the hall for special events – it is too small. With good vision and planning it is hoped that a new building will service both Haven’s growing community and the school for many years to come. So it is really important that we celebrate the existing hall for the special memories and events that it has held over the years – the fun times – the working bees – the many friendships that have been shared along the way.
