The Joel Joel Public Hall is 93 years old. The area was named after Joel Pennington, the manager of Tottington Station who, whilst droving sheep from Warrnambool to Tottington, camped by the Wimmera River for a month. At the time there were numerous Aboriginal camps along the river and Mr Pennington, who recognised the advantages of keeping on friendly terms with the natives, gave them tobacco and rations. The Aboriginal custom of doubling words gave Joel Joel its unusual name.

The Joel Joel Hall is run by a dedicated group of local volunteers from Joel Joel, Landsborough West and Greens Creek. The Hall is used for weddings, birthdays, pastoral groups, craft groups and our annual garage sale and Carols by Candlelight.

The women of Joel Joel in partnership with Northern Grampians Shire Council won the National Award for Local Government for their community work after the 2010/2011 floods.
